Cam's Story

~Finding out I was pregnant for my third child was a miracle!  Already a mother of two I felt I was blessed.  But a third, wow!  We found out we were having another boy.  Already very outnumbered in our home, another boy would be fine.  We decided to name him Cam McCain Caldwell after my husband's grandfather, Morris McCain (Mac).  We took the letters of Mac and reversed them to Cam.  Grandpa was such an amazing man and absolutely loved family.  We were fortunate to have him until he was 92 years old.~
     ~As my pregnancy progressed into my third trimester I was so excited to see my baby boy...wondering if he would take after either of his big brothers or if he would have his own look.~ 
     ~I was hospitalized at 32 weeks because Cam failed a non stress test.  They kept me overnight to observe Cam.  The next day I was released and felt so blessed to have a healthy baby.~
     ~Time progressed and my belly expanded.  Cam's movements were becoming more like nudges and I looked forward to them daily.  The night of March 19th, 2011, I was surprised to feel Cam's movements so strong.  I just sat on the couch and patted my tummy to try to calm him down.  When I woke the morning of March 20, 2011, I started to realize that I had not felt Cam move.  I just figured he was worn out from all of the moving he did the night before.  I waited another hour and decided to call the doctor.  My doctor told me to go to the hospital for a non stress test just to make sure everything was ok.  My husband called my parents and we all headed up to the hospital.  My two boys were excited to see Nanny and Papaw and waited in the lobby with them.  The nurse hooked me up to a machine and was not able to find Cam's heartbeat.  She reassured me that it was not uncommon to not find a heartbeat right away.  Another nurse came in and attempted to find his heartbeat....no luck.  About that time my doctor arrived and again....had no luck finding Cam's heartbeat.  I felt sick and wanted to scream.  I still had hope as an ultrasound machine was called in.  I was very still on the table and watched my husband's face.  No one was saying anything...and I heard the words I was not prepared to hear..."I am sorry."  A rush of adrenaline filled my body and the tears began.  I wanted to scream “NO!’’ and wake up from this terrible nightmare.  Lying there I felt like needles were all over my body and I asked my doctor what happened.  He had no answers other than Cam had turned breech through the night.~
     ~Cam was born three hours later via c-section.  He was such a beautiful baby and big for a month early.  He weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was 20.5 in. long.  He had little curls in his hair and looked very much like his grandpa Caldwell.~
